What are Varicose Veins?
Varicose veins are among the most noticeable types of venous conditions. They most commonly occur in the legs and have the appearance of extremely bulged and twisted veins. Part of the reason why they tend to be so noticeable is because they are located directly underneath the skin. While they certainly aren’t the most desirable veins, they pose more than cosmetic concerns. They can also pose medical problems, and they come with symptoms such as itching, burning, swelling, skin discoloration and pain in general.
Varicose veins appear when the valves in the veins weaken and can’t push the blood as quickly as they used to. When the blood flow slows down, then pressure builds up in the veins and causes varicose veins.
What are Spider Veins?
The smaller veins that are extremely thin and web-like or spider-like in appearance are known as spider veins. These veins are usually red, blue or purple in color, and they have the appearance of squiggly lines or spider webs. Spider veins are not as noticeable as varicose veins, but they can be accompanied by itching, aching, cramping and a feeling of heaviness in the affected areas. They are oftentimes caused by hormonal factors, pregnancy, weight gain, or hereditary factors.
