What are Varicose Veins?
Veins send blood back to the heart from other parts of the body in order to re-oxygenate it. Over time, veins can become damaged as a result of age and medical conditions. Varicose veins usually require corrective treatment. As a result of weakening, veins can become enlarged and allow blood to pool under the skin.
When this process occurs in the legs, varicose veins develop. These veins are more than unsightly and embarrassing. They are actually caused by diseased veins that have become dilated and cannot stop blood from flowing back to your feet. Varicose veins are similar to spider veins. However, spider veins tend to be smaller and closer to the surface.
What are the Causes of Varicose Veins?
Varicose veins are primarily caused by venous insufficiency. This is a condition that affects around 40 percent of America’s population, and it actually happens when tiny valves inside the veins cannot close. These valves work to stop blood that comes back to the heart from flowing back into your lower extremities. When the valves aren’t able to close, blood can build up and pool in your veins. Your veins get larger and swollen when the blood pools.
Varicose veins are generally inherited and get worse with age. While they can occur anywhere in your body, they will usually appear in your legs.
What Should I do If I Develop Varicose Veins?
Varicose veins can cause discomfort and pain, so it is important you set up an appointment with Dr. Moszczynski as soon as you notice their development.
