What are Varicose Veins?
Veins transport blood from various parts of the body back to the heart. Throughout one’s life, they can become damaged due to specific medical ailments or just wear down with age. When veins stop functioning properly, blood may flow in the wrong direction and pool in the veins.
When blood pools in the leg, varicose veins develop. Varicose veins are veins underneath the skin of the thighs and leg that are substantially larger than normal veins, making them extremely noticeable. Unfortunately, varicose veins can look quite unattractive and cause discomfort. Usually, varicose veins are more severe when a person gets older. They are most commonly found in the legs; however, they can occur in other parts of the body as well.
Spider veins are a similar problem. They tend to be substantially smaller than varicose veins, forming thin black or blue lines on the skin. As they overlap, they often begin to resemble a spider web.
What are the Causes of Varicose Veins?
The primary cause of varicose veins is venous insufficiency, which typically occurs when the primary valve of the vein is not able to close completely, allowing blood to flow backward. Nearly 40 percent of Americans suffer from venous insufficiency. When these valves do not close properly, blood begins to pool in parts of the body. The veins become enlarged due to the improper flow of circulation.
