What are Varicose Veins?
First of all, veins send blood back to the heart from the other parts of the body so it can be re-oxygenated. These veins can get damaged due to various medical conditions, which will eventually require corrective treatment.
Varicose veins are simply veins that are located underneath your thighs and legs and become enlarged. Along with affecting your appearance, these veins can be painful in some situations. They are caused by diseased and dilated veins that are not able to stop blood from flowing into the feet. Although spider veins are somewhat similar to varicose veins, spider veins occur closer to the surface and tend to be smaller than varicose veins. In addition, they can be found in other areas, not just the legs.
What are the Causes of Varicose Veins?
The leading cause of varicose veins is venous insufficiency. This is a condition that affects nearly 40 percent of the population in the US, and it happens when small valves in the veins are not able to close properly. These valves will actually stop the blood that flows back to the heart from flowing back into your extremities. When the valves aren’t able to close properly, this will cause blood to pool in some parts of the body. As a result of this pooling, veins will then swell and enlarge. Varicose veins are known to be an inherited trait, and they tend to get worse as a person grows older.
What Should I do If I Develop Varicose Veins?
Since varicose veins cause some discomfort and pain, and can point to medical issues, it’s best you make an appointment with Dr. Moszczynski as soon as you notice the condition developing.
