Sclerotherapy in Jersey City, NJ
At Vein & Skin Studio, residents who live in Bayonne and other nearby areas in New Jersey can make an appointment for sclerotherapy. Dr. Zbigniew Moszczynski is a board-certified surgeon in phlebology and general surgery who performs sclerotherapy to eliminate varicose veins.
What is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is an injectable solution for varicose veins that is highly effective at sealing them shut. Varicose veins are enlarged veins that can appear bright blue, purple or red. These types of veins commonly occur in the legs and face, and can be removed safely because the venous system does not depend on them to function properly. Sclerotherapy injections deliver good cosmetic results, and in 85 percent of cases, the treatment also relieves discomfort pain symptoms.
Since it is an injection-based procedure, it is easy for Dr. Moszczynski to perform sclerotherapy in the office. The injections are safe, and cause only mild discomfort for a majority of patients. Depending on your condition and the results that you seek, you could need two to six sclerotherapy injections to achieve the best outcome. It usually takes less than 30 minutes for Dr. Moszczynski to complete each treatment.
There is practically no downtime required following sclerotherapy treatments. Patients are encouraged to go about their normal activities, as healthy circulation promotes recovery.
How Does Sclerotherapy Work?
The first thing that Dr. Moszczynski and his team will do is to clean the skin at the target area with an antiseptic solution. He will then stretch the skin and administer the sclerosing solution into the varicose veins, using one injection every inch. The number of injections varies, but each treatment usually involves between five and 40 injections. After making the injections, Dr. Moszczynski will put compression tape over the treatment area.
How Many Treatments are Required?
Several sessions are typically needed for optimum results, but you are likely to benefit from just one session of sclerotherapy. The varicose veins will be totally eliminated with this procedure.
Is Sclerotherapy Safe?
Sclerotherapy is safe, and it is very rare for patients to suffer complications.
Will There be any Downtime?
There is little downtime required following sclerotherapy. We will provide you with support hose to place over the bandages to ensure that you heal properly. We also encourage walking in order to avoid the development of blood clots. You should also avoid:
- Standing, sitting, or squatting for long periods of time
- Strenuous exercise such as jogging
- Lifting heavy items
What can I Expect After a Sclerotherapy Treatment?
You will see a remarkable difference between the untreated and treated varicose veins. Your skin will appear clearer, younger and healthier.
How Soon Will Results Appear After a Sclerotherapy Treatment?
You will quickly see a dramatic change in your skin. When you remove the compression tape, the area will probably be bruised, and the injection sites will likely be reddish. It takes a little time for the bruises to diminish. There is sometimes a brownish discoloration that could take a while to fade entirely.
How Long Does Sclerotherapy Last?
The procedure will permanently destroy the varicose veins that were treated. However, it will not affect new veins that appear and grow over time.
Who Should Avoid Sclerotherapy?
This treatment might not be approved for people who have blood-borne diseases, circulation problems, diabetes, heart conditions or hepatitis.
How Does Sclerotherapy Treatment Feel?
You might feel some discomfort during the sclerotherapy treatment. The sclerosing solution is administered with a needle, and multiple injections are performed. You could feel a slight burning sensation during the injections, but this is temporary and fades within minutes.
How to Prepare for Sclerotherapy?
It is advised that you wash your legs thoroughly before the treatment and refrain from using lotion, moisturizer, oils or sunscreen. If possible, schedule the treatment for a time when the weather is relatively cooler. That way, you can wear long pants for a few weeks afterwards to hide the bruising that could appear.
Recovery after Sclerotherapy
You will be required to wear the compression tape and support hose for a few days after receiving sclerotherapy injections. It is recommended that you walk after the treatment to prevent blood clotting. However, you should avoid jarring exercises such as jogging until at least one month before your second treatment session begins.
How Much Does Sclerotherapy Treatment Cost?
Since we offer personalized treatment plans to all our patients, your cost for sclerotherapy will different from that of anyone else’s. Many health insurance plans cover all or part of the cost of sclerotherapy when it is medically necessary. We accept cash, personal checks, and major credit cards, and also encourage our patients to apply for CareCredit® financing to help them better afford treatment.
