What are Leg Ulcers?
Leg ulcers are sores that appear on the leg’s surface. These wounds are shallow, and can take several weeks to heal. Also referred to as “venous skin ulcers”, they appear on the ankle and calf. The slow-healing nature and reoccurrence of leg ulcers makes them different from other types of wounds.
What Causes Leg Ulcers?
Leg ulcers also called “venous leg ulcers,” are caused by vein conditions. These ulcers result from inadequate circulation that causes the blood to settle in the legs. As the blood collects, the tissue that surrounds the veins starts to deteriorate, creating an ulcer. Vein blockage or venous insufficiency is often to blame for the poor circulation.
Venous leg ulcers are usually found between the calf and ankle on the lower half of your leg. If you see ulcers on other parts of the leg, you may have neuropathic skin ulcers or arterial skin ulcers. Arterial skin ulcers typically affect the feet and toes. People with diabetes have a greater risk of developing neuropathic skin ulcers. Dr. Moszczynski can diagnose the type of ulcer and discuss your treatment options.
What are the Symptoms of Leg Ulcers?
Leg ulcers will have a reddish-purple appearance in the area where the ulcer is bleeding. You may see thick, dry skin near the ulcer that is also itchy. Some patients experience leg pain and swelling. These ulcers can become infected if left untreated. If the ulcer is infected, it may emit a foul odor and pus. The infection may also cause redness and the skin to feel tender to the touch.
How are Leg Ulcers Diagnosed?
Dr. Moszczynski is able to diagnose the presence of leg ulcers after a medical examination, which includes a discussion about your medical history, and a test to determine how well the blood is flowing in your legs.
What Should I do if I have Skin Ulcers?
Leg ulcers indicate the presence of a vein health issue. An examination will help to uncover the causes of the ulcers so that we can develop a plan to treat them.
How Does VIR Treat Leg Ulcers?
Dr. Moszczynski uses Endovascular Venous Laser Therapy to treat leg ulcers. Endovascular Venous Laser Therapy involves making a small incision into the diseased vein. Using ultrasound, Dr. Moszczynski will place the fiber at a precise location inside the vein. The laser will direct heat into the vein until it closes. You are placed under conscious sedation during the procedure, which takes 30 to 40 minutes. Your total time in our office is around one to two hours.
